Joe Jeffrey Group
The Joe Jeffrey Group was an American rhythm and blues band, who had a #14 hit on the ''Billboard'' Hot 100 in 1969, and entered Vancouver's CKLG chart May 23, 1969 called "My Pledge Of Love".〔(Billboard.com )〕 The group was made up of Joe Jeffrey (born Joseph Stafford Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) (vocals, guitar), Al Russ (bass), Charles Perry (percussion) and Ron Browning (drumspl).〔(Soulfulkindamusic.net )〕
The group also recorded a version of My Baby Loves Lovin', which charted concurrently with the bigger hit by White Plains. Their version reached #115 on the ''Billboard'' Bubbling Under chart.
Joe played in the greater Cleveland Area off of Miles Road, in a bar 3 or 4 nights a week named, "In The Woods" in the early to mid-70s. The dark road off of Miles road was literally 'in the woods'. Obscure a place as it was, no matter the night of the week, younger people would be dancing on the tables. A one-man band, he played guitar and sang. The crowd he drew aged from 21, to people in their 70s. He played "My Pledge of Love", "My Baby Loves Love", old standards, Stevie Wonder, different R&B artists, his version of "Impossible Dream", and had quite a variety of tunes to pick from. His repeated advice to me in music was a mantra of, " Be Yourself ! ". With any "If, And, or, But", he'd interrupt with, "Be Yourself !" He later played in another bar/restaurant more toward Warrensville, a suburb of Cleveland, where he lived. Everything he did was at least as good, but many thought usually better, than the originals. "My Pledge of Love" in my opinion wasn't even his best performance. It was great, but so were so many others. It's a shame he didn't record some of the songs that anyone could see he had fun playing. Then again, he didn't play anything he didn't want to play. He was top-shelf, first class, a master musician and entertainer. I moved out of town and later learned he passed away. He spent time and was a good friend to me. His "Be Yourself" advice, works. I miss him.
Joseph, jr. was born in Arkansas, USA.
